News Flash 'P V DOBSON - KUBOTA CONSTRUCTION DEALER OF THE YEAR 2024'

Meet the team: Liam Clark – Sales Representative

Liam Clark, who has been working for P.V. Dobson since 2022, has a big passion for gravel rallying. He competes in the British National Championship, BTRDA (British Trials & Rally Drivers Association) in the B14 4-wheel-drive class with a sequential gearbox. Liam currently ranks 3rd in his category.

His car is a factory-built, 4x4 Ford Fiesta, equipped with a 1600cc turbo engine and antilag, built by M-Sport in Cockermouth for rallying. The car is specially designed with stronger Reiger suspension with greater travel, 5 speed sequential gearbox, roll cage, and fire extinguishers to meet FIA competition standards.

Liam Rally

When and how did you start this adventure?

I first got hooked around five years ago after watching a rally in York. I was immediately fascinated by it.

What is required to compete?

  • Passing the BARS Test to obtain a Motorsport licence, which includes a 50-question exam and a driving test.
  • A car, along with the necessary race gear: fireproof suit, helmet, gloves, and a 'Hans Device' to protect the neck in case of a crash.
  • Fire extinguishers must be serviced every year.
  • A car inspection after each race.
  • A car mechanic.

Where can you practice rallying? Have you required any additional training?

I had a few hours of training before I started rallying. There are some gravel testing tracks in the country where I can practice my skills, but we don't have the opportunity to test in the forest before the actual events. To practice, I need to travel to Wales.

How often do you compete?

The rallies take place every month from March to September. The events are held in Scotland, Wales, and Yorkshire.

What has your progress been like?

I started with a front wheel drive car, and this is now my second season rallying a 4x4. The next step would be competing at the World Championship level, but as it's a self-funded hobby, it requires significant financial investment.

What are the costs involved?

For each race, I use around 120 litres of fuel, 6 tires, plus the cost of the mechanic, travel, hotels, etc. I spend all my money on this! and I am luckily supported by my dad. Currently, I'm looking for sponsors."

Who else is with you in the car?

The navigator reads the pace notes, basically telling me everything I need to know regarding tightness of corners and entry speeds while I focus on driving as fast as I can. This year, I have the pleasure of working with Carl Williamson, who has worked with World Championship driver Jari-Matti Latvala. Carl’s experience and skills have been invaluable and make a huge difference to my performance.

Are you nervous before the event?

I'm always a bit nervous before the first stage, but once it starts I don’t have time to think about being nervous, I try and focus and just get on with the rally. I love it.

Next Challenge?

I’d like to win the Championship!

We wish Liam all the best of luck in his future endeavours!
